Prologue. Before the first move

BALL was not born to look complex. It was born from a discomfort: the suspicion that part of game design had begun to confuse depth with accumulation. More rules. More pieces. More exceptions. More states. More pages. As if a rulebook could become intelligent by sheer volume.

The intuition that eventually guided BALL was the opposite. Designing is not about demonstrating how many things can be added, but discovering how many can be removed without depth disappearing. Sometimes, the less space the designer occupies, the more room remains for the player to appear.

This is not a defense of simplicity for simplicity's sake. A system that is too poor can also be exhausted. The question is different: to find the point at which a rule stops adding thought and begins replacing it; the point at which a possibility stops enriching a decision and begins diluting it.

BALL does not try to fill the board with intelligence. It tries to empty it enough for the intelligence of two people to be seen.

That is why every rule was debated. The grid was not the first option. Seven players are not an aesthetic whim. Two action points do not come from a die roll or an inherited convention. The cards are not there because “modern games have cards.” The fixed starting formation does not exist for convenience. The fact that pieces do not die is not indulgence. The fact that DEF moves first is not an accident.

Everything belongs to the same question: how do you build a contemporary game that can produce surprise without hiding in randomness; variety without drowning in combinations; advantage without turning it too quickly into a sentence; and depth without requiring the player to memorize an encyclopedia?

BALL began as frustration and ended up becoming a discipline. For more than eight years, every addition had to justify why it deserved to exist. And often the hardest work was not inventing a rule, but finding the courage to remove it.

The result aims to be more than an abstract adaptation of American football. It aims to be a philosophical position on what a board game can be when it takes seriously the mathematics of decision, the geometry of space, and the limits of the human mind.

I. THE LIE AND THE REBELLION

Before speaking of numbers, BALL needs to dismantle an intuition. The game begins by deceiving us with the very words we use to describe it.

1. BALL begins with a lie

BALL begins before a single piece moves. It begins with a sentence that seems so obvious that almost no one feels the need to question it: one attacks and the other defends.

ATK has the ball. DEF does not. Language seems already to have decided the nature of both. One must advance; the other must stop it. One possesses the initiative; the other reacts. One creates; the other contains.

But that is the first lie.

DEF is not on the board to prevent a touchdown. DEF is there to recover the ball and score its own. It does not want to preserve the world as it is: it wants to take it from the other and transform it. Defense is merely the provisional name of whoever does not yet possess what they desire.

The paradox deepens when we look at the supposed attacker. ATK begins with the ball and, for that very reason, begins with a burden. One of its pieces carries something that must be preserved. The ball carrier can advance, hand off, pass, protect itself; but possession turns that piece into a center of responsibility. The team possesses a privilege and, at the same time, an obligation.

The ball is not only power. It is also debt.

ATK also has a second conceptual disadvantage: it does not begin the game. DEF moves first. One possesses the object; the other possesses the first instant. One has the ball; the other has the first opportunity to alter the meaning of space.

BALL separates two ideas we tend to confuse: possession and initiative.

Possessing does not mean dominating. Moving first does not mean attacking. Retreating does not mean yielding. Advancing does not mean progressing. The names ATK and DEF describe an opening photograph, not an eternal identity.

When DEF steals the ball, the pursuer becomes the pursued. The side that seemed to be attacking must recover. The side that seemed to be resisting discovers that all along it had been preparing the possibility of its own touchdown.

This will be a constant of the game: roles do not belong to pieces or players. They belong to the state of the board. BALL does not ask who you are. It asks what the position allows you to do now.

2. Against abundance

BALL was born from a rebellion against a very seductive idea: that a game is deeper the more things it allows you to do.

It is easy to manufacture the appearance of richness. Simply multiply components: a larger board, more directions, more characters, more abilities, more action types, more states, more exceptions, more resources, more cards. The number grows and the rulebook begins to resemble a continent.

But the size of a continent does not tell you how many places are worth visiting.

An option is not automatically an interesting decision. A rule is not automatically depth. An exception is not automatically realism. In design, adding possibilities can enlarge the space of play; it can also merely increase the noise separating the player from what matters.

Depth is not born from having many things to do. It is born when what you do has consequences rich enough to remain worth thinking about.

BALL looks to the classics for that reason. Chess and draughts do not survive intellectually because they have accumulated rules for centuries. They survive because the rulebook ends quickly and the conversation begins afterward.

The point is not to imitate them. It is to recover a conviction that sometimes seems forgotten: a system can be austere in instructions and vast in consequences.

Contemporary design has every right to explore greater complexities. BALL does not declare a game illegitimate for having many rules. Its objection is more precise: when accumulation is used to simulate depth without asking whether a human mind can rank the decisions, complexity stops being a tool and becomes an alibi.

BALL does not want the player to admire the rulebook. It wants the player, once it has been learned, to forget it enough to begin thinking.

3. Simplicity is cruel to the designer

Adding is comfortable. Removing is a form of exposure.

When a complex system encounters a contradiction, there is always a temptation to add something: an exception, a modifier, a phase, an ability, a note in the margin. The new rule may cover the symptom even while the underlying problem remains.

Simplicity offers no such hiding place.

When few rules remain, each stands naked. Seven must explain why not six or eight. Two PA must explain why not three. The diagonal must explain why not orthogonal movement. The cards must explain why they exist. Immobilization must show why it is better than permanent elimination. The starting formation must justify why it is not left free.

Simplicity is not the absence of work. Often it is the trace left after too much work has been done.

During BALL's development there were clever ideas that had to disappear precisely because they were clever only to the designer. They added a small spectacle to the rulebook but did not improve the quality of decision. Or they added realism and destroyed legibility. Or they expanded the tree of possibilities without adding a new kind of thought.

The question stopped being “does this rule work?” and became more severe: “is the game worse if we remove it?” If the answer was no, the rule was condemned.

That discipline explains why BALL took so many years to reach a relatively compact set. The work did not consist of filling a vessel. It consisted of distilling it.

Designing, in that sense, resembles building a mountain less than carving a stone: form does not appear because we add matter, but because we understand which part is excess.

4. When the deterministic becomes cognitively opaque

BALL does not confuse complexity with randomness. But neither does it accept that the absence of dice, by itself, guarantees a strategically transparent experience.

A system can be deterministic and still exceed the human capacity to explore its consequences. In theory, everything is fixed by decisions. In practice, the tree can grow so quickly that the player stops calculating and begins navigating by intuition, shortcuts, and hope.

The useful mathematical language here is the branching factor: how many reasonably distinct continuations a position generates. If we call b the average number of relevant options and d the depth of analysis, an elementary approximation of the number of sequences is:

N(d) ≈ bᵈ

This is not an exact formula for a real game: branches have different lengths, many positions transpose, some actions depend on others, and the quality of options is not homogeneous. But the intuition matters. With an effective factor of 100, two levels already suggest about 10,000 continuations. With 1,000, two levels point toward the order of a million.

No specific number marks a universal boundary between “strategy” and “chance.” Great games can have high branching factors, and experts learn to prune them through patterns. BALL's thesis is different: a designer should ask how much of the decision space can be ranked by a human mind and how much becomes gratuitous opacity.

You do not need to roll a die to manufacture uncertainty. It is enough to build more consequences than a person can attribute to a cause.

BALL tries to avoid that indiscriminate uncertainty. It does not want the player to win because they chose a branch impossible to evaluate among ten thousand equivalents. It wants surprise to appear because one of the two minds read a visible structure better, managed resources better, or prepared a break that the other could have anticipated.

That is an essential difference: not eliminating uncertainty, but deciding where it deserves to come from.

II. THE GEOMETRY OF THE THINKABLE

Once abundance has been rejected as a criterion of depth, a harder task remains: to build a space rich enough to produce strategy and precise enough to be read.

5. The grid as language

The grid was not the first option. It became the chosen one because a geometry is not merely a support: it is a grammar.

Every topology decides what it means to be near, what it means to surround, what it means to block, how many exits appear around a piece, and how quickly the number of destinations grows. A hexagonal board increases local connectivity. A continuous space introduces measurements, angles, and gray areas. An orthogonal grid favors other patterns.

BALL found in diagonal movement on a grid an especially fertile relationship between clarity and freedom. With one PA, a piece in an open environment can have up to four immediate diagonal moves. Four is enough for choice and small positional deception to exist; it is not so much that every piece becomes an autonomous universe.

The diagonal also forces the field to be read in a particular way. Lines intertwine. Useful squares are not simply “forward.” Progress may require lateral preparation, retreat, or connection.

The grid reduces physical ambiguity in order to increase intellectual clarity.

The virtue is not that the player has four options. It is that some can be discarded according to their relation to the objective. A square that does not protect, recover, connect, threaten, open, close, or bring you closer to the touchdown can quickly leave the analysis.

Strategic thinking is also elimination.

That is why the objective of the game functions as a cognitive compass. The touchdown is not merely a victory condition; it is a criterion for ranking geometry. The board stops being a catalogue of squares and becomes a directional question.

6. Seven players: density without saturation

Seven players were not a decorative number either. BALL needed density, but not saturation.

With too few pieces, the field empties too quickly: relationships, blocks, support networks, and simultaneous threats diminish. With too many, every turn becomes the management of a mass of micro-decisions and space loses legibility.

Seven allows different functions to appear without turning them into rigid classes: ball carrier, support, runner, blocker, deep threat, recovery piece. The same piece can change function as the position changes.

In an open geometry, the first-order intuition is simple: seven pieces multiplied by up to four immediate diagonal destinations produce a raw ceiling of 28 one-PA movement candidates before occupation, restrictions, consequences, and strategic relevance are applied.

They are not 28 guaranteed “real moves.” Some will be illegal; many will be useless; other actions besides movement will compete for the same budget. That is precisely the intention: for the number of candidates to be broad enough to allow style and bounded enough for the player to prune it.

BALL does not want to maximize the local freedom of every piece. It wants to maximize the meaning of the freedom that survives.

Seven creates a structure in which every temporary absence is felt, every connection matters, and every displacement can alter several relationships at once. A piece is interesting not only because of its destination. It is interesting because of how it changes the geometry of the other six.

7. Two PA: a budget for decision

Action points turn the turn into an economy.

Two PA do not simply mean “you may do two things.” They mean you cannot do everything. The game forces visible priorities.

You can concentrate the budget on a more costly action or split it. You can move different pieces, build a sequence, prepare a handoff, alter a blocking relationship. The ability to spend PA individually enables small combinations and enlarges the sequence tree without turning it into an unmanageable initial explosion.

A one-PA action usually produces a local effect. But two linked actions can produce an idea: open and occupy, draw and escape, protect and throw, threaten and reserve. Value appears in composition.

Every turn is a thesis about what deserves to exist now and what can wait.

This is one reason BALL does not need to grant twenty action types to every piece. Depth emerges from combining a relatively short vocabulary under a temporal constraint.

The PA limit forces intention to become visible. When there are resources for only some things, every action implies renunciation. And renunciation is information: the opponent can read what you considered a priority, what you abandoned, and what threat you may be preparing.

The turn stops being a list of moves. It becomes a declaration of value.

8. The zero point: why BALL abandoned free deployment

There was a point in development when BALL allowed players to place their pieces however they wished before starting. It seemed the logical decision: if the game believes in freedom, why not grant it from the very first second?

Experience showed that this freedom contained two opposite problems, and either one was enough to call it into question.

First possibility: an objectively superior deployment exists.

If geometry ultimately pushes expert players toward one dominant arrangement, or toward a small set of clearly better arrangements, then free deployment becomes a problem already solved that every beginner is forced to solve again. Supposed creativity becomes a cognitive toll. Decades of experience could end up teaching everyone the same answer.

Forcing every player to repeat that discovery does not add depth. It delays access to it.

Second possibility: no dominant deployment exists and the opening space remains very broad.

Then the opposite problem appears. Before the first move there is already an enormous tree of initial states. Every opening depends on a configuration that may never recur. A brilliant line discovered today may have no value tomorrow because the opponent will arrange their pieces differently.

In both cases BALL lost something important. If deployment converged, it offered false freedom. If it did not converge, it destroyed the possibility of building comparable theory from the origin.

Not every freedom increases depth. Some freedoms destroy the possibility of accumulating knowledge.

The decision was to fix a symmetrical, uniform deployment. Not to decide for the player, but to decide where the game truly begins.

BALL stopped asking “how do you want to place your seven pieces?” and began asking something more fertile: “from this same world, what world will you build?”

9. Symmetry to produce history

A common origin does not make games identical. It makes it possible to understand why they cease to be.

The fixed starting formation functions like the control in an experiment. If we want to compare hypotheses, we need to hold some conditions constant. Repeatability does not eliminate difference: it lets us attribute it.

Two games that begin from the same state can be compared. Two first moves can be debated. One DEF response can be measured against another. An opening can be refuted. A sequence can acquire a name. A variation can correct the one before it.

With free deployment, every game risks becoming an anecdote: “it worked because that time we started like this.” With a stable zero point, games begin to speak to one another.

Opening symmetry does not erase personality. It gives personality a stage on which it can be recognized.

This has a consequence that goes beyond the table. The player can think BALL when BALL is not in front of them.

They can remember where every piece stood. They can reconstruct the beginning mentally. They can walk, drive, wait, or try to sleep and wonder what would happen if, in the next game, DEF opened differently, if ATK pretended to repeat a known sequence, or if a threat appeared one turn earlier.

Obsession needs coordinates.

How do you prepare a deception if you do not even know what the initial world will be? How do you write a book of openings if every game is born from an arbitrary universe? How do you accumulate experience if the experiment's first condition changes every time?

BALL needed memory. And memory needs stability.

Fixed deployment allows knowledge to stop belonging only to one particular table. It can begin to belong to the game. At that moment the conditions appear for something extraordinary: not only strategy, but culture.

III. TIME, POSSESSION AND ADVANTAGE

BALL tries to ensure that power is not a motionless quantity. Advantage should exist, but it should also breathe. It should be possible to win it, exploit it, exhaust it, and make it change hands.

10. To possess is also to defend

Possession of the ball appears to be an advantage because it brings ATK closer to the victory condition. But BALL wants every advantage to have a price.

The carrier concentrates responsibility. While a free piece can devote itself entirely to building space, connecting, blocking, or threatening, the carrier must include preservation of the ball in its calculation. Possession gives direction, but it also reduces freedom.

That is why ATK begins, paradoxically, with a defensive dimension: it has something to lose.

DEF begins without the ball, but with the first move and without that obligation of preservation. It can invest its structure in altering the space ATK assumed was safe before ATK has taken a single action.

Whoever possesses an advantage is also bound by the need for that advantage to continue existing.

This relationship repeats throughout the game. Accumulating PE gives power, but also turns the resource into something that can be forced to be spent. Advancing a piece creates a threat, but may weaken a connection. Closing a zone protects, but may immobilize.

BALL tries to ensure that power always has a shadow. Not to neutralize it, but to prevent the player from ceasing to think at the very moment they believe they have gained an advantage.

11. Pieces do not die

Another debated decision was what to do with superiority. BALL could have inherited the logic of permanent capture found in many classic games. It chose something else.

When a piece disappears for good, material count is not the only thing that changes. Part of the future space disappears. Routes, threats, connections, and possibilities of recovery are reduced. The game's statistics contract and advantage tends to become permanent structure.

In chess, losing material can be entirely legitimate and profound; its irreversibility is an essential part of the game. BALL was seeking a different experience.

Here a piece can be rendered unusable, blocked, removed from action for a window of time. Superiority exists and can be brutal, but it demands conversion.

BALL does not want to tell you: “now you have more than the other player.” It wants to tell you: “for a moment you can do something you could not do before; show me that you know how to see it.”

The neutralized piece remains part of the future. The opponent knows the window will close. The player who gained the advantage knows the clock is already running.

The consequence is tension. Tactical success cannot simply be stored as property. It must be converted into space, possession, energy, position, or touchdown before it loses part of its value.

Advantage stops being only material. It becomes time.

12. Advantage as a window

A window is powerful precisely because it closes.

BALL wants the player to learn to recognize unrepeatable moments. An unusable opposing piece can open a lane. A block can reduce responses. An accumulation of energy can make a position unsafe that one turn earlier was stable.

But the system prevents too many local advantages from automatically becoming a permanent global sentence.

That does not mean protecting the weaker player. A competitive game must allow quality to express itself. The question is how it is expressed. BALL prefers to reward the player who knows how to convert a temporary advantage rather than the player who merely preserves it because the rules made it irreversible.

Superiority is not a treasure. It is an opportunity with an expiration date.

This idea keeps the game alive. A player can be objectively worse off and still have questions to ask. The leader is not given permission to stop thinking. The pursuer is not given permission to surrender.

BALL seeks a tension in which it is almost never intellectually comfortable to declare a position one hundred percent won or one hundred percent lost while the game still retains enough resources and geometry to produce transformation.

Not because everything can be artificially recovered, but because most advantages require continuous execution.

13. Reversibility, stability and competitive fairness

A system in which everything were reversible would be trivial. A system in which too many things were irreversible could be decided too early. BALL tries to inhabit the space between those extremes.

Mistakes matter. Decisions leave traces. Resources are consumed. Used cards do not return. Wasted time does not return either. But the board retains the capacity to reorganize.

This mixture produces a particular stability: the game can tilt without collapsing immediately.

The competitive fairness BALL seeks is not about keeping players artificially level. It is about making advantage depend, for as long as possible, on decisions that still need to be made.

Rewarding advantage does not require making it eternal.

The stronger player must continue demonstrating that they understand what they have won. The weaker player must continue demonstrating that they understand what part of the position can still be transformed.

In that sense, BALL prefers windows to sentences, pressure to elimination, and conversion to simple accumulation. The mathematics does not disappear; it remains dynamic.

The desired result is a game that is stable without being flat: fair enough that the past does not completely crush the future, cruel enough that the future must still pay for the past.

IV. THE ENTROPY THAT MUST BE EARNED

A system that is too stable eventually becomes predictable. BALL needs rupture, surprise, and exceptionality. But it refuses to receive them for free.

14. Uncertainty should come from the players

BALL needs entropy. But it needs a very particular kind of entropy.

The term is used here as a design metaphor, not as a strict identity with thermodynamic entropy or Shannon entropy. “Strategic entropy” describes the growth of plausible futures and the increasing difficulty of ranking them when resources appear that can temporarily break ordinary geometry.

The key is that BALL does not hand over all that uncertainty on the first turn.

It lets the players build it.

The most interesting surprise is not the one that falls from the sky. It is the one the opponent watched grow and still failed to interpret.

PA keep the present relatively legible. PE allow potential to be stored. Cards turn that potential into finite ruptures. Thus the game's complexity does not arrive as a prior avalanche; it has a history.

Every accumulated resource increases certain possibilities. Every expenditure reduces them. Every card consumed removes a class of future. Every position changes the marginal value of energy.

Entropy stops being noise. It becomes something the players produce, manage, and fear.

15. PE: storing the future

A PA belongs to the present. A PE may belong to the future.

That temporal difference is one of BALL's central ideas. When a player transforms immediate capacity into energy, they renounce a visible action in order to preserve future optionality.

The board shows the current geometry, but the energy counter reminds us that geometry does not contain all the power available.

Accumulating PE means turning present time into future uncertainty.

A player with little energy can be read mainly through position. A player with stored energy forces the opponent to consider states that do not yet exist. The distance between what the board appears to allow and what can actually happen grows.

That gives PE a value that is not purely quantitative. It does not represent only “more actions.” It represents latent threat.

And latent threat changes decisions before it is used. The opponent may close a route you have not yet attempted. They may reserve a piece for fear of a rupture. They may abandon a sequence to keep a response available.

The resource begins working even while it remains untouched.

In that ability to condition without spending lies a form of strategic power more sophisticated than simple action.

16. Cards: a necessity, not an ornament

BALL's cards exist because energy needs form.

Without cards, PE would be an abstract reserve capable of becoming anything or a generic bonus. That would enlarge possibilities but dilute language.

The cards delimit exceptionality. They define what kind of rupture can be bought, what it costs, and when it is no longer available.

They are finite. Seven cards means the player does not have an infinite source of miracles.

An exception retains its force only while it cannot become routine.

A used card is not merely an advantage gained. It is also a future possibility that has disappeared. The player asks not only “can I do it?” but “is it worth making this one of the few times I will be able to do it?”

In this way energy becomes economy and the card becomes commitment.

BALL does not introduce cards to inflate the product's commercial variety. It needs them because the system requires a finite mechanism of rupture capable of increasing entropy without handing randomness control over when and why it appears.

The player decides when to make the board extraordinary.

17. The economy of forcing the opponent to spend

Accumulating PE is important. Preventing the opponent from accumulating it may be even more important.

And when you cannot prevent it, a third possibility appears: force them to spend before they want to.

This is one of the resource's deepest layers. A move can be good even if it gains no immediate space when it forces the opponent to consume energy they were saving for another sequence.

Forcing PE is eroding the future.

The visible board may not change much, and yet the strategic horizon may. A defense that costs the opponent a card may have survived the current threat and lost a future threat. An attack that consumes energy to escape may preserve possession and weaken the next turn.

That is why evaluating BALL cannot be reduced to counting squares. It must include resources, windows, and optionality.

Energy introduces a war over the future: I do not only try to build my possibilities; I try to reduce yours. I do not only want you to respond. I want your response to be expensive.

The most elegant pressure may be the pressure that does not achieve what it appeared to seek, but forces the opponent to pay to prevent it.

18. The human flash

Energy has a mathematical function. It also has a poetic function.

BALL is inspired by American football, where some plays seem for an instant to defy the normal order of the field. A runner sees a window that lasts less than a second. A player dodges with a precision that seemed not to exist. A quick read turns a closed structure into opportunity.

Real life contains speed, fatigue, training, intuition, coordination, acceleration, peripheral vision, communication, error, and physical ability. Trying to represent every variable with a different rule would produce a parody of realism.

BALL compresses many of those dimensions into an abstraction: the extraordinary possibility prepared in advance and executed at the precise moment.

PE is training converted into possibility; the card is the instant when that possibility finds its window.

It is not magic. It is not a favorable die. The resource had to be accumulated. The card had to be preserved. The position had to be built. The opportunity had to be read.

The result may look explosive because it represents something that is also explosive in sport: a flash of intelligence and physical capacity that reorganizes the meaning of the field before everyone else has finished understanding it.

BALL does not try to simulate every muscle. It tries to represent the moment when a trained mind decides what to do with them.

V. A GAME THAT CAN BE STUDIED

The final purpose of all these restrictions is not to produce a small system. It is to produce a system that can enter memory, survive away from the table, and return more than the rulebook contains.

19. Perfect information, imperfect interpretation

In BALL, almost everything important can be in plain sight and still not be understood.

That is one of its favorite forms of uncertainty. Not the uncertainty of not knowing what card the other player will draw, but of not knowing what meaning they assign to a position both players can see.

An advanced piece can be a threat or a decoy. A closed formation can be defense or preparation. A runner may be opening space for another. An accumulation of PE may announce a rupture or exist precisely to make you fear one.

Everything is visible. What is hidden is the hierarchy.

Two players can know exactly the same rules and describe exactly the same squares, yet live inside different models of the future.

That is where BALL locates an essential part of talent. Not in remembering more exceptions than the opponent, but in interpreting shared information better.

The transparency of the system removes alibis. When a sequence surprises you, the question is rarely “what information was I missing?” It is usually more uncomfortable: “what was I looking at that I failed to understand?”

20. Deception without darkness

BALL's best trap does not need to hide anything.

It may be enough to present a real threat and get the opponent to treat it as the main threat. It may be enough to offer a reasonable answer to a question that was never the important question.

Every move asserts something: this zone matters; this piece is dangerous; this lane must be closed; this expenditure is urgent. The opponent responds not only to geometry, but to the story they believe that geometry is telling.

A correct answer to the wrong question is still a defeat.

That is why BALL resembles a conversation between two minds. Every action is a sentence. Every omission is one too. Every accumulated resource can be a grammatical threat: a word not yet spoken that conditions the rest of the sentence.

Deception does not necessarily consist in lying. Sometimes it consists in allowing the other person to arrive, on their own, at an incomplete conclusion.

That is a particularly fair form of deception: the opponent had access to the same truth. The difference was in the reading.

21. Openings, memory and obsession

A game reaches another category when it continues after the pieces return to the box.

The player gets up, but a position remains. It appears on the way home. It returns while they wait. It reconstructs itself before sleep. “What would have happened if I had kept the PE? What if DEF had opened on the other side? Could I have forced that card one turn earlier?”

The fixed starting formation was decisive in allowing that continuity. Because there is a common origin, thought can return to it without having to remember an arbitrary configuration.

This is how the possibility of opening theory is born. Not because BALL wants artificially to become chess, but because any game that aspires to be studied needs comparable positions, cumulative memory, and the ability to distinguish novelty from repetition.

An opening is memory converted into future.

With time, lines, habits, refutations, schools, and second-order deceptions can emerge: I know that you know this opening; you know that I know you know it; so I repeat its first moves in order to leave the line precisely where you expect me to continue.

That kind of depth cannot be printed in a rulebook. It has to be produced by a community.

BALL wants to leave room for that to happen.

It does not aspire merely for the player to remember a game. It aspires for them to study a position, teach it, discuss it, write about it, prepare it against someone, and discover years later that what seemed solved still had another reading.

There the game stops being only a product. It begins to become a potential tradition.

22. Translating American football, not copying it

BALL is inspired by American football. It does not aim to become a literal miniature of American football.

If we tried to model every variable of the real sport—speeds, trajectories, physical abilities, fatigue, contact, communication, errors, roles, routes, conditions, synchronization—we would build a system of enormous descriptive richness and probably poor competitive legibility.

Literal realism can be the enemy of ludic truth.

BALL chose to translate tensions, not copy details: territory, possession, recovery, protection, rupture, blocking, support, reading, explosiveness, and touchdown.

BALL prioritizes mathematics and geometry over realism because it wants to preserve what makes the sport interesting, not what makes it impossible to fit on a table.

A rigorous adaptation is not the one that represents the most variables. It is the one that identifies which variables are structural to the experience it wants to provoke.

That is why a BALL runner does not need a table of speed, strength, fatigue, acceleration, and balance. They need to inhabit a geometry in which an extraordinary decision can have meaning.

Sport provides the imagery. Mathematics decides what survives the translation.

23. Eight years to arrive at less

BALL was developed for more than eight years. The phrase may suggest accumulation. In fact, it describes a long history of renunciation.

There were heavier versions. There were freedoms that seemed desirable and ended up as noise. There were rules that explained one particular situation better and made the whole system worse. There were ideas that had to be debated, tested, and discarded.

The grid survived other geometries. Seven survived other numbers. PA survived other economies. Fixed formation survived the appeal of free deployment. Immobilization survived capture. Energy and cards survived because they solved a need the basic system could not solve by itself: to produce rupture that is accumulable, visible, and finite.

The player sees the rules that survived. They never see the rules that had to die so those rules could breathe.

This is perhaps the least commercial part of design. The market rewards visible novelty. A box can photograph components; it cannot photograph an eliminated rule. Yet often the quality of a system lies precisely in what is no longer there.

BALL does not aim to impress through the amount of design it displays. It aims for the years of design to disappear inside an experience that feels inevitable once understood.

The aspiration is for the player to say, “of course, it had to be this way,” without seeing how long it took to discover that it did not have to be any other way.

24. When the designer disappears

There is an ideal moment when the designer ceases to be interesting.

The player already knows the rules. They do not need to consult the author. They do not need to admire the architecture. They do not need to remember the eight earlier versions or the decisions that were discarded.

They need only the opponent.

That is the final examination of the system. If the game continually depends on the designer explaining why something is deep, perhaps the depth is not yet on the board.

The best design eventually steps aside.

The conditions remain. A grid. Seven players. Two PA. Energy. Seven cards. A ball. Two lines. A known starting formation. Everything visible.

And then begins what the designer can never write.

A new opening. A trap. A response no one expected. A school of play. A book. An argument. A game remembered ten years later. A child who discovers a sequence an adult did not see. An expert who returns to a position that seemed exhausted and finds another question.

At that moment BALL no longer belongs entirely to the person who designed it.

It belongs to everything two minds can do within its limits.

Coda. Two lines and every future

At first BALL lies.

It tells you that one attacks and the other defends.

It gives you the ball and allows you to confuse possession with power.

It lets you believe that freedom consists in having many options, that a piece is worth more the more it can move, that an advantage is better the more permanent it is, that realism increases with every variable added, and that a game seems deeper when the rulebook weighs more.

Then it begins to remove those certainties one by one.

The defender wants to score. The attacker must protect. Possession has weight. Initiative may be elsewhere. The grid does not limit thought: it makes thought visible. Two PA do not impoverish a turn: they force it to choose. Seven pieces are neither few nor many: they are a density. Fixed formation does not remove freedom: it creates memory. The piece that does not die forces advantage to be converted before the window closes. PE does not introduce randomness: it stores the future. The card does not grant a miracle: it charges the price of having prepared one.

BALL does not seek to eliminate uncertainty. It seeks to give uncertainty an author.

So that a surprise can be attributed to a mind.

So that a defeat can be studied.

So that a victory is not a retrospective statistical explanation, but a chain of decisions another player could have read.

So that the board is stable enough to remember and alive enough to betray our certainties.

So that there is a zero point from which openings can be written and an open horizon where no opening is the end of thought.

So that knowledge can accumulate without turning the game into routine.

So that the experience of a game survives the game.

So that someone can close the box and keep playing for hours inside their head.

Then the rulebook will have fulfilled its function.

The designer will be able to disappear.

And two people will remain facing the same world.

They will see the same seven pieces. The same diagonals. The same counters. The same known cards. The same ball. The same lines. No privileged information. No die waiting to absolve them.

Everything will be there.

And yet they will not see the same thing.

One will see a defense where the other sees a lane. One will see safety where the other sees a prison. One will see an immobilized piece where the other sees a clock. One will see four PE. The other will see a future that does not yet exist.

For a few seconds, both will share exactly the same truth and inhabit different possibilities.

Then one of them will move.

And an idea will become geometry.

A geometry will become pressure.

Pressure will force a response.

The response will cost time.

Time will become energy.

Energy will find a window.

The window will last barely an instant.

And someone will see it first.

That is the place BALL has spent eight years trying to reach: the instant when the rules stop speaking and intelligence becomes visible.

Not in an encyclopedia.

Not in a roll.

Not in an exception no one remembered.

In a decision.

In a diagonal.

In a deception that was in plain sight.

In a future built with two action points and a possibility saved for later.

In a touchdown that, when it finally happens, seems sudden only to the person who did not see how it began to exist many turns earlier.

BALL is not a celebration of the rule.

It is a celebration of everything that can happen when the rule, finally, knows how to be silent.

Because a great game does not need to contain the world.

It needs to contain a space precise enough for two intelligences to enter it and never find exactly the same way out.

Seven players.

A grid.

Two PA.

Energy.

Seven cards.

A ball.

Two lines.

Everything visible.

And between those two lines, not a collection of rules, but a question that can last for years:

What can you see here that the other has not seen yet?

The touchdown is only the place where the answer finally becomes visible.
